888 Auctions Presents Fine Jade Bangles, Collectibles & Asian Art Sale February 23
Richmond Hill, ON – February 23 marks the third auction of the year for 888 Auctions containing 424 fresh-to-market Fine Jade Bangles, Collectibles & Asian Art. For the discerning collector, this sale features quality jade carvings, porcelain ceramics, bronzeware, jewelry, and an eclectic collection of collectibles.
The featured lot of the sale will be Lot 169, a Grade A Burma Jadeite Carved Bangle, GIA-certified. Of rounded edge, tumbled and polished to a very good lustre, this is a quality piece of Grade A jadeite carved bangle that is accompanied by a certificate hailing from the PNJ Lab in Thailand and appraised by noted gemologist appraiser, Donald Mackay. Considering the ubiquity of fake jade carved bangles on the market, Lot 169 has been garnering considerable interest due to its quality and certification and is expected to surpass its high estimate of $20,000.
Following closely on the heels of the highlighted item is Lot 170, another Grade A Burma Jadeite Carved Bangle, GIA-certified . It too carries the same certification and commands a high estimate of $20,000 as well.
For those who are more interested in more esoteric jade carved items, two seals featured in this month’s auction may be of particular interest. Lot 129 features a Chinese Spinach Green Jade Carved Dragon Seal. Bearing a six-character Qianlong mark on base with Manchu characters and the sides incised with Chinese characters, it is expected to surpass its high estimate of $2,400. Lot 115 is another seal featured in the auction: a Chinese Rare Imperial Gilt Jade Double Dragon Seal. This seal is of rectangle section and surmounted by a pair of dragons. The seal face is carved with Chinese characters in seal script and hails from the 11th to 14th century. It commands a high estimate of $40,000.
From the selection of Chinese porcelain ceramics is Lot 222A, a Qianlong Blue White Porcelain Saucer. The interior is painted with a medallion enclosing Three Friends of Winter motif. The exterior is finely painted with monk and lady figural courtyard scenes. This saucer bears a fine Qianlong Mark and is of the Period. With exceptional provenance hailing from Christie’s at their London location, it was purchased in 1991. It is expected to surpass its high estimate of $80,000.
Bronzeware continues to hold fascinating appeal for collectors due to its longevity and durability, both in terms of its physical features as well as its investment potential. Collectors will be intrigued then by the inclusion of Lot 392, a Chinese Fine Bronze Buddha 17th Century. This finely cast figure of Buddha carries a $40,000 high estimate.
For those interested in 888 Auctions’ staple of watercolour brush-wash paintings, they will not be surprised to find Lot 40, a Qi Baishi (1864-1957) Watercolour Long Hand Scroll. Featuring still life paintings of various auspicious items such as grapes, cabbage, mouse, insects, mushroom, books, carrots, flowers, lamps, and teapots, the Chinese ink and watercolour painting is signed with the signature of Qi Baishi. This exceptional painting commands a high estimate of $8,000.
However, the painting that has continued to garner greater interest leading up to the auction can be found at Lot 15, a Li Wenfeng b.1979 Chinese Oil on Board, Dated 2010. Carrying a $16,000 high estimate, this modern painting depicts a naked beauty. Signed Li Wenfeng and measuring 100 cm by 100 cm, its artistry must be seen to be appreciated.
