888 Auctions Chinese New Year Auction Collection of Canadian Paintings

Richmond Hill, ON – With Chinese New Year just around the corner, make it an auspicious occasion with 888 Auctions at their February 2 sale. 429 fresh-to-market items will be available to the discerning collector featuring quality paintings, jade and stone carved items, porcelain ceramics, bronzeware, and jewelry.

Headlining the auction will be Lot 24Q, a J.E.H Macdonald 1873-1932 Oil Group of 7 C.1922. Titled “Early Autumn Gull River”, this framed oil on board masterpiece has been signed by James Edward Hervey MacDonald (1873-1932), a member of the famed Group of Seven. Dated 1922, the painting features a scene of the Gull River of the Algonquin Highlands. Boasting exceptional provenance from Gallery Walter Klinkhoff, this piece commands a high estimate of $80,000.

Not to be outdone is a charming piece at Lot 22, a Yayoi Kusama b.1929 Japan Acrylic Board Dated 1966. Signed Yayoi Kusama and hailing from a private Canadian collection, it is dated 1966 on front and verso and expected to surpass its conservative high estimate of $1,600.

Jadeite continues to draw both interest and high prices and this auction is no exception. Featured at Lot 213, the Chinese Imperial Green Jadeite Bangle & Lingguan headlines the collection of jade carved items. The rare imperial grade jade carved bangle and lingguan is of excellent translucency and has been appraised Grade AAA quality by Donald Mackay GIA. Measuring 69.1 mm in diameter, this high quality imperial green jade carved bangle is estimated at $30,000.

Fine Jewelry continues to fetch impressive prices; buyers and collectors looking to purchase for a loved one will be pleased to find the inclusion of Lot 243, a 0.3ct Topaz and 1.5ct Diamond Pendant. It is expected to surpass its high estimate of $800.

Another jade carved item garnering great interest can be found at Lot 174, a Chinese White Jade Carved Archaic Vase with Cover. The Chinese white jade carved vase is of square body and raised on flared foot. Carved with intricate taotie archaistic patterns in relief, the vase carries a $20,000 high estimate.

Finally, an 888 Auction would not be complete without a blue and white porcelain ceramic. Lot 335, a Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Dragon Jar, is sure to please many interested parties. The porcelain jar is of globular form with a narrowed neck and featuring carved low-relief dragon and fire motifs. Painted with a wavy pattern on the body with a geometric frieze pattern bordering the neck, it is expected to surpass its $5,000 high estimate
