Oil on canvas. Featuring a portrait of a woman. Signed BEN ENWONWU 1971 on the lower left corner. A picture of Ben Enwonwu is used to cover the verso, which is inscribed PROV: Collection of William B Fagg C.M.G.. Also on the verso, is a newsletter clipping featuring a biography of Ben Enwonwu. Inscribed THE DAILY TELEGRAPH PUBLISHED: 0317 and stamped 26 FEB 1994. Verso is also inscribed Galeriea Mathias Fels. A label inscribed BEN ENWONWU 1917-1994 and inscribed PROV: Collection of William B. Fagg C.M.G. on verso. Attributed to Ben Enwonwu (1917-1994, British-Nigerian). 30 x 25 cm (12 x 10 inches).

Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu MBE (1917-1994), better known as Ben Enwonwu, was a Nigerian painter and sculptor. Arguably the most influential African artist of the 20th century. His pioneering career opened the way for the postcolonial proliferation and increased visibility of modern African art.
