Andy Warhol Life and Impact

“Pop Art” has become synonymous with Andy Warhol.  Obsessing over celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical (re)production, he created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Many of his art was famous for his quips. He mused that “…art is what you can get away with…” and that “…everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”

Warhol frequently extracted from popular culture and everyday subject matters for his works.  He created pieces like his 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962), Brillo pad box sculptures, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe.  Many of his pieces used the technique of silk-screen printmaking, which consequently, helped to characteristically hard edges and flat areas of color.

Known for his cultivation of celebrity, Factory studio (a radically social and creative melting pot), and avant-garde films like Chelsea Girls (1966), Warhol was also a mentor to artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Warhol’s pop sensibility is now standard practice.  As a result, major contemporary artists such as Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons, among countless others have incorporated Warhol’s penchant for pop. PROVENANCE: Private Collection (South America)
