Label affixed at bottom inscribed Winston Churchill 1874-1965 and stamped Galerie Vallauris and verso. On verso notation inscribed in pencil illegibly. Attributed to Winston Churchill (British, 1874-1965). 12 x 8 in. (30.5 x 20.5 cm).

Winston Churchill 

Churchill was fond of oils for their forgiving, flexible nature, bright colors and the joy they exuded. “Just to paint is great fun,” he wrote. “The colours are lovely to look at and delicious to squeeze out.” He was known to set up his easel outdoors to capture the grounds of his country home in Kent, called Chartwell. The Chartwell was presently owned by the National Trust and open to visitors today, it still houses Churchill’s preserved painting studio.

The ‘politician-painter’ would also work during his travels to Egypt, Italy, Morocco, and the south of France, among other locations. PROVENANCE: Private collection (Manchester, UK).
