888 Auctions Ushers in 2015 with Fine Chinese Carved Amber Figure

Richmond Hill, ON – After a successful year in 2014, 888 Auctions is prepared to usher in the new year with a fine collection of Fine Chinese Art and Natural History Carvings Thursday, January 15th, 2015. Comprising over 500 lots, the auction will showcase an enticing collection of Asian art and antiques including but not limited to natural history carvings, paintings, porcelains, bronze cast Buddhist deities, fine furniture and jade and shoushan pieces. Items have been selected for their fine artistic merits, historical value, and exceptional provenance.

Highlighting the first auction of the year will be Lot 433, a Fine Chinese Carved Amber Figure of a Pair of Arhats. Standing just shy of 13 cm, the two mythical figures are standing atop auspicious clouds holding a fu dog. The finely carved amber piece is accompanied with a certificate and is expected to seize over its high estimate of $18,000.

Another standout piece is Lot 420, a Fine Chinese Horn Carved Libation Cup ; featuring fine openwork carvings of plants in relief, the mahogany-toned, lotus leaf-shaped rim libation cup commands a $12,000 high estimate and has garnered high interest already. Continuing the theme of Natural History Carved items in the auction, the following are other fascinating fresh-to-market items:

  • Lot 400: Natural Uncarved Chinese Amber 242g with Stand (High Estimate: $4,000)
  • Lot 402: Large Very Fine  Colombian Cognac Amber, Certified (High Estimate: $3,000)
  • Lot 419: Chinese Fine Carved Horn Libation Cup (High Estimate: $3,200)
  • Lot 421: Chinese Fine Carved Horn Libation Cup (High Estimate: $3,500)

Moving on from the Natural History carvings, the January auction will also feature an intriguing collection of jewellery in the sale. A Certified Chinese Green Jadeite Carved Necklace with Diamond can be found at Lot 252 and carries a high estimate of $8,000. A 14K White Gold Diamond (0.70 ct) Ring CRV $7800 (High Estimate: $5,000) and Sapphire 16.20 ct & Diamond 0.29 ct Earrings $8580 (High Estimate: $6,000) can also be found at Lot 227 and Lot 241 respectively.

From the collection of porcelains, buyers and collectors will find a Ming Chenghua Period Blue & White Porcelain Cup Christie’s at Lot 293. Hailing from the Hatcher Collection of Christie’s 1984 auction the blue and white is expected to exceed its $8,000 high estimate.

Jade collectors will find a Qing Period White Jade Ruyi Scepter at Lot 214; featuring monkeys with lingzhi heads  and tong bao in relief, the translucent white toned jade scepter with apple green suffusions carries a $20,000 high estimate.
