13 SEPT 2011 – Asian Art Part II: Horn Carvings Lead the Way

RICHMOND HILL, ON– 888 Auctions concluded Part II of Asian Art on Saturday, 10 September as it realized over $168,000. With a vast array of Asian art on display, the evening was primed to be an exciting and remarkable.

The evening began with Chinese traditional paintings selling at a remarkably consistent sell-through rate of over 80%. Most notably, Lot 257B, a Qi Baishi Watercolor on Paper Hanging Scroll featuring butterfly and cicada fetched $2,420.

That set off a series of remarkable sales for the rest of the evening beginning with the sale of Lot 412, a Chinese Beijing Republic painted ivory figure that found its sales value at $2,420. In addition, Lot 551  an elaborately openwork carved ivory Tripod Shou Censer with six-character Qianlong Mark sold for $2,662.

However, horn carvings proved to be the biggest winners at 888 Auctions’ Asian Art: Part II totalling over $70,000 alone. The first salvo was fired as Lot 504A: a small Chinese carved rhinoceros horn pendant of a lion exceeded its estimate high realizing $850. At Lot 509A, a Chinese carved rhinoceros horn figure of Immortal and Boy also exceeded its estimate high fetching $4,598 from the floor; while at Lot 514, a Chinese rhinoceros horn carved libation cup realized $4,400 from a floor bidder. However, nothing would have prepared those on the floor for Lot 515: an 18th Century Chinese rhinoceros horn carved two-faced Buddha Head. Far exceeding its estimate high of $30,000, it realized $49,610 bringing an unexpected and resounding round of applause on the floor.

Ending the day with natural history items, Lot 960, an old sea turtle skin shell brought in $605 to conclude 888 Auctions’ successful evening.
