Modern Paintings, Russian Art and Asian Antiques Highlight Spring March 15 Auction at 888 Auctions
Richmond Hill, ON – 409 lots featuring modern paintings, Russian art, and Asian antiques are available to the highest bidder March 15. Modern fine art pieces heavily feature in this auction and collectors will be excited to see the inclusion of some pieces with exceptional provenance. Big names such as Andy Warhol, Modigliani, van Gosh, Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Jackson Pollock are featured alongside some lesser known but no less significant names such as Russian avante-garde artists Tolkunov Pavlovich and Fyodor Federovsky, as well as contemporary artist, Chuang Che.
Collectors of works by Chuang Che will be excited to see an acrylic and oil on canvas painting. Boasting exceptional provenance from the Arwin Gallery and passed down by descent, lot 63, entitled, “Landscape #30, is characteristic of Chuang Che’s spirited, free-flowing, and expressive style. This piece was exhibited in one of the three exhibitions when the Arwin Gallery worked in close partnership with the artist himself. It commands a high estimate of $45,000 and is already garnering significant interest from interested collectors.
Three standout pieces also boast exceptional provenance. Lot 68 is a Tamara de Lempicka (Polish, 1898-1980) charcoal study of Andromeda. On verso is a gallery label hailing from the O’ Hana Gallery (London) and it was acquired by a private collector (New Jersey, United States). This piece features a high estimate of $12,000.
Another piece with strong provenance can be found at lot 74, an Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920) gouache on panel portrait. Featuring a receipt of a sales record dated 8 December 1969 from Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc. – an affiliated firm of Sotheby and Co. London – to the buyer, David Fogelson, lot 74 is expected to surpass its high estimate of $20,000.
The third modern art piece featuring strong provenance can be found at lot 86, a Frida Kahlo self-portrait rendered with mixed media on board. Lot 86 features a Julien Levy gallery on verso and is consistent with when she first exhibited her works in the late 1930s. This piece features a high estimate of $20,000.
