Natalia Goncharova 1881-1962 Headlines Russian Paintings, Modern Art & Jadeite Jewelry Auction December 7
Richmond Hill, ON – December 7 marks the penultimate auction of the year with a heavy emphasis on Russian Paintings, Modern Art and Jadeite Jewelry. Featuring 398 fresh-to-market items, collectors of fine art and jewelry will be delighted to find the inclusion of items with estimates ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
Headlining the December 7 sale will be Lot 95, a Natalia Goncharova (Russian, 1881-1962) Oil on Canvas painting featuring a pair of peacocks in antithetical positions prominently looking towards a radiant sun. Assimilating themes of sacred and the profane and the religious and the secular were prominent motifs utilized by Goncharova, and this attributed work is certainly a work that is consistent with her other works. Her fascination with icon painting and primitivism of ethnic Russian folk-art is quite different from her later artwork in which the influence of Russian Futurism was evident later on in her life. Although, she would later become a leader of the Moscow Futurists and a member of the Der Blaue Reiter avant-garde group, her work prior to her embrace of Futurism continues to intrigue and fascinate critics and fans of her work. Lot 95 is expected to surpass its high estimate of $25,000.
Other Russian paintings from the modern era can also be found at the following lots:
Lot 63: Ivan Kliun (Russian, 1873-1943) Watercolour Paper (High Estimate: $3,500)
Lot 90: Andre Lanskoy (Russian, 1902-1976) Oil on Canvas Abstract (High Estimate: $7,000)
Lot 93: Leon Gaspard 1882-1964 Russia Oil Portrait (High Estimate: $15,000)
Lot 94: Leon Zack 1892-1980 Russian/French Oil Abstract (High Estimate: $8,000)
Lot 96: Serge Poliakoff 1906-1969 Russian/French Oil on Canvas (High Estimate: $15,000)
Modern art continues to be a staple at 888 Auctions and there are several big names to be found among the offering of items featured in this sale. Admirers of Edgar Degas will find joy knowing that his attributed work can be found at Lot 57. Lot 57 is a Pencil on Paper sketch featuring a ballerina gracefully rendered while in the middle of her pirouette. Hailing from a Southern Ontario estate, lot 57 commands a high estimate of $4,000.
Following closely on the heels of Lot 57, is an Andy Warhol graphite on paper sketch of his eponymous Cow Series. Andy Warhol’s Cow Series, a series of four screenprints, was one of the first series Warhol ever created and although the graphite on paper sketch does not necessarily capture the vivid colours that brought the screen series to life, it still manages to capture the whimsical quality of the print series. The series was famous for projecting Warhol’s unique vision regarding the effects of mass imagery and commercial production while also humourously capturing his stance against painting, a medium in which he had previously been utilizing. Lot 57 features a high estimate of $5,000.
Another American artist also highlights December’s auction, Lot 68, a Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1985) Mixed Media Face. Featuring a painting of a mouth, face, and crown and signed and attributed to Jean-Michel Basquiat, the painting commands a high estimate of $7,500.
Collectors of Canadian art will appreciate the inclusion of Lot 75, an A.Y. Jackson (Canadian, 1882-1975) double-sided painting. One side features a wind-swept landscape scene. On verso features a smaller landscape painting of a lake shoreline with blue mountains in the backdrop. Hailing from a private collection in Toronto, ON, lot 75 is expected to reach its high estimate of $4,000.
A highlight from the Chinese watercolour paintings can be found at lot 53A, a Xu Beihong ink and watercolour on paper featuring a horse. Accompanied with a certificate and previously in the collection of Mr. Kong Ming Ma (1937-2017) and currently in the private collection of his son by inheritance, this piece features a $20,000 high estimate.
An auction conducted this close to the holidays would not be complete without some dazzling jewelry and this sale features a strong selection of offerings for the discerning collector looking to find a precious piece. There are two examples in this auction sure to garner strong interest:
Lot 214: Burma Green Jadeite Carved Bangle GIA Certificate (High Estimate: $22,000)
