Max Pechstein

Max Pechstein was born 1881 in Zwickau in Saxony, Germany to a craftsman father who labored in the textile mill. Vincent Van Gogh was an early influencer who helped develop expressionism in him.

Pechstein was formally trained at the School of Applied Arts and later at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden. During his time at the academy, he also met Otto Gussmann and architect Wilhelm Kreis. Around 1902, Max eventually became an apprentice under Gussamann for approximately 4 years. Following his apprenticeship, he was invited to join the German art group Die Brucke which focused on expressionism.

Over his prolific career, he was uncharacteristically conservative in his views and styles. In 1933, Pechstein being opposed by the Nazis because of his art and was later banned from painting or exhibiting his works. In the same year, he was later fired from teaching at the Berlin Academy. During his ban, a total of 326 of his works were censored from German Museums.

Between 1937 and 1945 he went into voluntary seclusion until the end of the War. After the war, he was reinstated formally and shortly afterwards Pechstein began to win various awards and titles for his works. He died at the age of 73 in 1955 in West Berlin.

Today, his works are found in various collections around the world. The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, Germany, and the Albertina in Vienna are listed among the many others.
