Norval Morrisseau

Norval Morrisseau was an Aboriginal Canadian artist, known as the “Picasso of the North.” As a young child, he was sent to a Catholic-run Indian “Residential School” and experienced sexual and psychological abuse that left him with deep emotional scars. This may have become the catalyst which transformed him spiritually; moving him away from a foreign religion to embrace his indigenous religion. Consequently, the manifestations of his past experiences with his passion for the indigenous people were displayed through his works. Although not formally trained as a classical painter, he derived many of his works from traditional myths and legends, visions and dream casting.

Norval Morrisseau was catapulted to the world stage after Jack Pollack, a Toronto art dealer, revealed the genius of his art. He was accredited as having initiated the Woodland School of Native Arts. The school was recognized for being a pillar of First Nations and Native American Art style representing Legend Painting or Medicine Painting.
