Modern Paintings, Chinese Art & Gemstones Lead the Way December 5, 2019 at 888 Auctions

Richmond Hill, ON – December 5, 2019 marks the penultimate auction of the season at 888 Auctions and the Canadian auction house is proud to feature 412 fresh-to-market items with a focus on Modern Paintings, Chinese Art and Gemstones. The live auction will be conducted on the gallery floor of 888 Auctions Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 2 PM (EST).

Although, modern art continues to be the highlight category of 888 Auctions with sell-through rates of over 90%, Chinese art and antiques, particularly watercolor paintings, have seen a resurgence in the winter auction season. Therefore, this auction has highlighted two pieces that may find a strong price at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer. The cover lot of the catalog, Lot 75, a Lu Sibai 1905-1973 Chinese Oil on Board Provenance features a still life of yellow flowers in a round green vase. Signed “Si Bai” on the bottom right corner in Chinese characters and with a paper affixed to verso reads, “Lu Sibai ‘Vase of Flowers’,” Lot 75 is expected to far exceed its high estimate of $2,000.

Another Chinese painting can also be found at Lot 195, a Pan Tianshou 1897-1971 Chinese Watercolor on Paper featuring a landscape scene of a pond. This lot carries a high estimate of $3,000.

As previously mentioned, modern art continues to perform very strongly across the board and several standout pieces are expected to achieve very strong prices. Lot 110 is an attributed Giuseppe Solenghi Italian Modernist Oil on Canvas features a landscape scene of river and figure. Signed G. Solenghi on the lower left corner and nestled within what is quite possibly its original frame, this piece is expected to surpass its $4,000 high estimate.

Another piece garnering significant interest can be found at Lot 147, an attributed Stanislaw Witkacy 1918 Polish Modernist Charcoal. Featuring a portrait of a woman wearing a necklace and shawl, it is signed Witkacy and inscribed 1918 with initials T.D and G.R on the upper right corner. Stamped in Polish on verso, this attributed piece at Lot 147 features a high estimate of $4,000.

Other modern art pieces are featured at the lows below:

Lot 41: Frida Kahlo ’40 Mexican Pastel on Paper (High Estimate: $4,000)

Lot 71: Winston Churchill UK Impressionist OOB Landscape (High Estimate: $5,000)

Lot 114: Gustav Klimt Austrian Modernist Oil on Canvas (High Estimate: $4,000)

Lot 131: Joan Miro Spanish Surrealist Watercolor on Paper (High Estimate: $2,500)

Lot 145: Henri Matisse French Fauvist Watercolor on Paper (High Estimate: $2,500)

Lot 207: Rene Magritte Belgian Surrealist Oil on Canvas (High Estimate: $4,000)

Lot 257: Keith Haring 1987 American TONY SHAFRAZI GALLERY (High Estimate: $7,000)

Lot 260: Fernand Leger French Cubist Acrylic MUSEE FERNAND (High Estimate: 2,000)

Jadeite bangles continue to be strong performers and already, a GIA appraised Chinese Burma Green Jadeite Bangle is sparking considerable interest. Lot 295, Chinese Burma Green Jadeite Bangle GIA Certificate features a translucent apple green tone and expected to surpass its high estimate of $12,100.
