Modern Art, Paintings & Asian Antiques Featured in May 23 Auction at 888 Auctions

Richmond Hill, ON – With the weather continuing its upward climb, the results achieved at 888 Auctions continues to provide stellar offerings to buyers and strong prices for sellers. The May 23 auction boasts a strong catalog featuring 454 fresh-to-market items with a strong emphasis on Modern Art, Paintings & Asian Antiques, Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 2 PM (EST).

The star lot of the auction is an attributed Sam Francis American Abstract Oil on Canvas painting at Lot 4. Featuring an abstract expressionist composition, and signed Sam Francis in the lower right corner, Lot 4 is expected to surpass its high estimate of $4,000 with many parties with a keen eye on the star lot of the auction.

Two other pieces from the American Abstract category are also finding significant traction leading up to the auction and can be found at the lots below:

Lot 92: Cy Twombly American Abstract Oil on Canvas (High Estimate: $5,000)

 

Pop art pieces continue to draw strong interest and the May 23 auction is no exception. Five lots are highlighted in this category with particular interest being focused on two lots within the auction catalog: Lot 101, an attributed Jean-Michel Basquiat US Pop Art Signed Linocut

and Lot 180, an attributed Roy Lichtenstein American Pop Signed Lithograph and numbered 10/200. Lot 101 and Lot 180 are both expected to exceed their high estimates of $2,000 and $4,000, respectively.

Chinese paintings continue to draw strong interest despite the decline in overall bidding for the Chinese arts and antiques categories. Bidders will be excited to find the inclusion of Lot 147, a Zhang Daqian 1899-1983 Chinese Watercolor Painting boasting a high estimate of $5,000. Lot 147 features a painting of a lotus and is signed and attributed to Zhang Daqian with two seal marks.

Last but not least is Lot 198, an attributed Pablo Picasso Spanish Cubist Oil on Canvas Dated 3.4.61. This oil on canvas piece featuring a cubist portrait is expected to surpass its $9,000 high estimate.
