Modern Art, Chinese Paintings & Antiques Lead the Way at 888 Auctions’ January 31 Auction
Richmond Hill, ON – 888 Auctions will be featuring 393 fresh-to-market items in its January 31 auction showcasing an eclectic collection of Modern Art, Chinese Paintings & Antiques. Coming on the heels of a very successful January 17 auction in which several lots sold for thousands of dollars, there is strong belief that this auction will feature more of the same outstanding results at 888 Auctions.
Lot 166 is the featured star lot of the auction. Featuring a reflective sign and spray painted with a figure holding an explosive Molotov cocktail in black, lot 166 is expected to exceed its high estimate of $6,000.
Another standout piece that is expected to realize a strong price can also be found at Lot 119, a Xu Beihong watercolor on hanging scroll painting. Featuring a boy riding a buffalo and painted in ink and watercolor on paper, this piece is accompanied by a certificate issued by the Beijing Wenboyuan Cultural Relics Appraisal Center and commands a $10,000 high estimate.
Abstract expressionist pieces continue to be a strong draw at auction and bidders and collectors can find the following pieces at the lots below:
Lot 34: Dutch Abstract Oil Signed William de Kooning (High Estimate: $5,000)
Lot 55: American Abstract Acrylic/Board Signed Cy Twombly (High Estimate: $9,000)
Lot 60: American-Canadian Abstract OOC Signed a. martin (High Estimate: $5,000)
Two expressionist pieces have garnered significant interest at the gallery: Lot 64, a German Expressionist Gouache Signed Max Pechstein (High Estimate: $5,000) and Lot 114, a French Surrealist Mixed Media Signed Marc Chagall (High Estimate: $5,000).
A small but important piece featuring a tempera on paper painting can be found at Lot 96. Featuring a restaurant scene and signed Vincent on the lower right corner, it features a high estimate of $5,000.
Not to be outdone, an understated but significant painting featuring an oil on paper features a portrait of a lady in a red overcoat. Signed Lempicka on the lower right corner and attributed to Tamara de Lempicka (Polish, 1898-1980) this painting commands a high estimate of $6,000.

For those looking for jewellery in time for the Chinese New Year, bidders may be delighted to find the inclusion of Lot 247. Featuring a GIA certificate and of fine green coloration, this jadeite bangle is expected to surpass its $10,000 high estimate.
