Edward Henry Potthast
Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927) was an American Impressionist known for his paintings of bathers at leisure in sun-filled beach scenes. Born on June 10, 1857 in Cincinnati, OH, he studied at the McMicken School of Design as a youth under Thomas Satterwhite Noble and found a job at the Strobridge Lithography Company. Potthast later traveled to Europe where he studied in Munich at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and to Paris where he first saw the works of the French Impressionists.
After returning to the United States, The artist continued to support himself as a lithographer until he was 39 years old. Relocating to New York in the 1890s, Potthast worked as a magazine illustrator and began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design. The artist died on March 9, 1927 in New York, NY.
Today, his works are held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
