August Market Review

Richmond Hill, Ontario – Strength was seen again from overseas buyers for quality Burmese Jadeite and Chinese stone. Particularly tianhuang carvings of design favorites like dragons and shou symbols also Hetian White Jade Pendants with zigang carvings. Unique Tianhuang pieces with crow skin and quality emerald green jadeite jewellery drew significant interest.

Porcelain was again the weaker category with a high percentage being passed over. However some strength was seen in classic BW examples and uniquely designed Republic pieces.  The market looks to be tapped out of speculators looking for that 18th century piece as premiums aren’t being paid for the risk. This could be the best opportunity by looking into the pile that nobody is looking.

Silk Dragon robes surprised to the upside.

Bronzes held up steadily.  They had a high sell thru rate though riduculously high prices were seldom seen. 20th century examples were most prevalent with figures of Buddha and Guanyin also tripod censers.

Zitan and Huanghuali woods were snatched up as good value was found amongst them. Brushpots and carvings of Guanyin seemed to be most popular.

Coral necklaces and classic Ivory and Horn carvings drew interested buyers as the CITIES lockdown continues to limit supply from foreign and domestic marketplaces.
