Larry Zox
Larry Zox (1936-2006) was an American Lyrical Abstraction painter and print maker. The movement evolved out of the Color Field paintings of Hans Hofmann, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland, also included the artists Larry Poons, Pat Lipsky, and John Hoyland, among others.
Zox’s works from the early 1960s utilized painted pieces of paper collaged onto joint pieces of plywood which created dynamic geometric shapes. After that, by using painted boundaries to create the effect of overlapping space, he essentially replicated the collaged quality that developed the foundation for his future paintings.
Born on May 31, 1937 in Des Moines, IA, Zox went on to enroll at the University of Oklahoma before studying under George Grosz at the Des Moines Art Center. Today, his works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Tate Modern in London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, among others. The artist died on December 16, 2006 in Colchester, CT.
