Chinese Paintings, Jade and Ceramics Lead 888 Auctions’ December 8 Sale

Richmond Hill, ON – December 8th, 2016 marks the last auction of the year for 888 Auctions and with 476 fresh-to-market items leading the way, there is something for all discerning collectors and buyers interested in quality paintings, jade, porcelain ceramics, bronzeware, jewellery, and natural history items.

Headlining the auction will be an exceptionally rare and finely carved 18th Century Green Jadeite Dragon Imperial Seal at Lot 237. The jade seal is of square section and surmounted by a coiling dragon with its head blanked by long and curved nostrils. The face is carved with four Chinese characters in seal script ‘Ming De Zhi Bao’ and the four sides are engraved with incised seal scripts. Weighing 2,199 grams, the lot is expected to surpass its high estimate of $160,000.

Not to be outdone is Lot 233 which features a Finely Carved Chinese Green Jadeite Paperweight. It is of rectangular section with curved top. Carved in low relief features a scholar figural scene in a riverside landscape. The base is incised with a four-character Qianlong Mark and is of the Period. The stone is of rare grayish celadon tone with a touch of apple green suffusions. Weighing 247 grams, it carries a high estimate of $16,000.

Ceramics continue to be in steady demand and 888 Auctions continues to consign an impressive collection of lots of period porcelain ceramics fresh to the market and carrying exceptional provenance. This auction is of no exception and carries on that tradition in the form of Lot 297 and 369. Lot 297 is a Ming or Qing Period Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Charger. It is of shallow form with rounded sides and the interior is painted with a ribbon-tied bouquet of stylized lotus floral sprays amidst leaves. The exterior is decorated with a composite floral scroll with an underglazed base. Measuring 40 cm in diameter, it commands a high estimate of $16,000. Lot 369 features a Tang Period Chinese Sancai Glazed Pottery Lady Figure. This Tang Dynasty pottery figure features a standing court lady holding musical instruments in her delicately crafted hands. Wearing a high shoulder costume with flaring draped skirt, the pottery figure features an application of amber, dark blue and green glaze. Standing 50 cm tall and weighing 2,371 grams, this exceptional piece is expected to surpass its $20,000 high estimate.

Chinese watercolour paintings remain a staple at 888 Auctions and the featured lot from this category slots in at Lot 61, a Xu Beihong 1895-1953 Watercolour on Paper Scroll. Accompanied with certification, the painting features Xu Beihong’s famous horse motif. Painted with two horses underneath a willow tree, the painting is inscribed with two artist seals and accompanied with a handwritten certificate by Liao Jingwen. Measuring 100 cm x 45 cm, it commands a high estimate of $30,000.
