888 Auctions’ Final Sale of the Year Showcase Fine Chinese Furniture and Paintings, December 4, 2014.
Richmond Hill, ON – December 4th will mark 888 Auctions’ final auction of the year featuring Fine Chinese Furniture and Paintings showcasing 500 lots.
888 Auctions hope to end the year with a flourish as they look to highlight some exquisitely carved furniture. Spearheading the furniture pieces in the auction will be Lot 466: a Set of Six Qing Period Rosewood Carved Chairs. Inset with “dreamstone” marble plaques and finely preserved with no nail construction and no evidence of the application of lacquer, this set of six rosewood carved chairs command a high estimate of $35,000. This set hails from a local collection and is dated to the Qing Period, 18th/19th Century.
Another 19th Century Qing Period set of four Rosewood Carved Chairs can also be found at Lot 467. Having pierced openwork carving throughout and the back rest depicting butterfly, fruit and leaves with the apron carved with prunus and leaves, the chair represents auspicious symbols of longevity and beauty. The back and apron are set with “dreamstone” marble plaques. The finely preserved set of four chairs has been constructed without nails and is expected to reach its $12,000 high estimate.

Fine lacquer carved items has been hard to find on the open market but collectors will be pleased to find a Chinese Red Lacquer Carved Cabinet with Drawers at Lot 490. Comprised of a glass shelf, two tiers of drawers and one cabinet, the cabinet boasts a provenance from the highly esteemed local collection of the Chang Estate. The cabinet has been modestly estimated at $2,000 but is expected to garner strong interest from both local and international bidders.
From 888 Auctions’ collection of fine paintings, Lot 14 is the highlight of the auction: a Watercolour Sketchbook featuring the work of Zhang Dazhuang (1903—1980). Comprised of 11 pages with multiple red seals bearing the artists signature, the watercolour rendered sketchbook is expected to exceed its high estimate of $10,000.
This auction will also be notable for its inclusion of two excellent paintings commanding estimates over $20,000. Lot 95, Chinese Watercolour Horse Scroll Painting by Xu Beihong with Certificate commands a $50,000 high estimate while Lot 108, a Chinese Lotus Watercolour Painting by Zhang Daqian commands a $20,000 high estimate.
