888 Auctions’ August 18 Final Summer Sale Featuring Fine Chinese Carvings, Ceramics & Bronzes

Richmond Hill, ON – August 18 marks 888 Auctions’ final summer sale of 2016 and will be featuring an assortment of 488 lots comprised of porcelain ceramics, bronze deities and vases, rare jade carved stones, and rare and valuable paintings.

Headlining the auction will be Lot 461, a Yuan Dynasty Chinese Gilt Bronze Buddha Figure. The Buddha figure depicts a Shakyamuni Buddha seated in dhayanasana, with the right hand in vitarka mudra and the left in avakasha mudra. Measuring 35 cm high and weighing 10 kilograms, this lot was previously sold at Hauchen Auctions in Beijing. Today, this commands a high estimate of $300,000.

Among other bronzeware in the auction is Lot 463, a Pair of Chinese Fine Bronze Cloisonne Vases Xuande Mark. These majestic hexagonal vases feature Bogu objects. Bearing a four-character Xuande Mark on base, the pair should exceed its $12,000 high estimate.

Ceramics continue to be held in high regard by collectors looking to find a bargain and this auction is no exception. Leading the way is Lot 299, a Song Dynasty Chinese Guan Type Porcelain Waterpot. The six-sided vessel with curved shallow sides is supported on circular foot rim and covered in an overall soft beige glaze. Suffused with an irregular matrix of fine dark-grey crackles with clear signs of its age, this delicate waterpot carries a high estimate of $20,000.

Not to be outdone, Lot 299 is followed by two other lots that have garnered significant interest from potential bidders:

Lot 384: Chinese Blue & White Octagon Porcelain Vase Xuande (High Estimate: $16,000)

Lot 404: Yuan/Ming Period Rare Blue & White Porcelain Jar (High Estimate: $16,000)

From the collection of jade carvings, Lot 217 may pique the interest of collectors: a Qing Period Chinese Imperial Green Jade Carved Seal. Featuring incised Manchu and seal script calligraphy on the sides and the seal face carved with eight characters ‘ba zheng mao nian zhi bao’ (which translates into ‘Treasure of concern over phenomenon at eighty’), the square section seal commands a $120,000 high estimate.

This auction is unique in featuring not one but two of Norval Morrisseau’s oil on canvas paintings. 888 Auctions continue to feature Canadian content and collectors of Canadian art may be pleased to find these paintings at the following lots:

Lot 19: 1974, Norval Morrisseau Oil on Canvas Canada 1932-2007 (High Estimate: $20,000)

Lot 20: 1978, Norval Morrisseau Oil on Canvas Canada 1932-2007 (High Estimate: $20,000)

Discerning buyers can bid with confidence knowing that both paintings have been appraised and are accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
