Ceramics and Jades Headline 888 Auctions’ September 15 Autumn Sale

Richmond Hill, ON – Thursday, September 15^th marks the beginning of the lucrative autumn season and 888 Auctions is proud to feature its customary collection of high quality, fresh-to-market items. Discerning collectors will encounter within the 450-lot auction a strong collection of jade carvings, Chinese porcelain ceramics, traditional watercolour brushwash paintings, and rare wood carved furniture.

Headlining the 450-lot auction is Lot 346, an 18^th Century Chinese Qianlong Period Falangcai Porcelain Vase. This extremely rare porcelain vase features a pear-shaped body surmounted by a slender neck. The exterior is exquisitely painted with a floral motif featuring myosotis flower, peony and rose sprays. Bearing a four-character Qianlong Mark on base, the Falangcai vase boasts exceptional provenance and is expected to exceed its high estimate of $80,000.

The strong collection of porcelains is also supplemented by a collection of other vases, bowls, and chargers. They can be found at the following lots:

Lot 266: Large Chinese Copper Red Fish Porcelain Bowl (High Estimate: $30,000)

Lot 308: Fine Blue & White Porcelain Charger Chenghua Mark (High Estimate: $16,000)

Lot 352: 18th Pair Fine Blue Peking Glass Porcelain Vases (High Estimate: $30,000)

In addition to its usual assortment of porcelain ceramics, collectors will be please to find the inclusion of a blanc de chine porcelain figure. Lot 368 is a 17^th Century Blanc De Chine Porcelain Figure. Hailing from the Ming Dynasty and depicting Damo Bodhidharma with hands resting on his right knee, the seated arhat is accompanied by a monkey and bears a four-character He Chaozong Yin square seal mark on verso. Standing 36 cm tall, it commands a high estimate of $20,000 and also boasts exceptional provenance.

The autumn auction also features two outstanding jade carved pieces. Lot 176 features an 18^th/19^th Century Imperial Yellow Jade Carved Dragon Seal. It is of square section and surmounted by a ferocious coiling dragon amidst swirling waves. The seal face is crisply carved with an eight-character mark, “Ba zheng mao nian zhi bao” roughly translated as “Treasure of concern over phenomenon at eighty”. The celadon jade seal carries a $50,000 high estimate.

Following closely on the heels of Lot 176 is Lot 177, a Chinese White Jade Carved Archaic Style Vase. The archaistic vase is carved in the form of a mythical beast and a kneeling figure. Carving in low relief with taotie patterns, the vase carries a $20,000 high estimate.

Lastly, Lot 177 features a Chinese 17^th/18^th C. Huanghuali Wood Carved Screen. Featuring an inset dreamstone marble table screen with Huanghuali carved wood stand, the circular marble stone features a landscape scene forming a natural design of layered mountain peaks. The screen needs to be seen in person to be appreciated and is expected to exceed its high estimate of $30,000.
