888 Auctions May 7 Sale to Showcase Chinese Furniture and Asian Works of Art

Richmond Hill, ON – 888 Auctions’ May 7th sale of Chinese Furniture & Asian Works of Art will showcase 506 lots.

Spearheading the summer sale will be an antique 6-piece huali rosewood carved soft set. Immaculately carved and well maintained, this 1940’s era sofa set features openwork carvings with custom-made glass top for lampstand and tea table. This rare set at Lot 226 commands a $20,000 high estimate with bidding expected to start at $12,000.

Following close on its heels will also be Lot 250, a Chinese rosewood carved opium bed. This rare opium bed features an inset marble “dreamstone” with openwork carved scrollwork. Lot 250 carries a high estimate of $20,000 and is expected to garner tremendous interest for connoisseurs of rosewood carved opium beds.

From the same 1940s collection of Lot 226, buyers may also find some rare antique rosewood carved furniture at the following lots:

Lot 210: 1940’s Set of Four Chinese Rosewood Stools (High Estimate: $5,000)
Lot 217: 1940’s Rosewood High Altar Table w/ 2 Drawers (High Estimate: $7,000)
Lot 225A: 1940s Chinese Rosewood Dining Set 8 Chairs & Table (High Estimate: $8,000)
Lot 242: 1940s Chinese Huali Rosewood Wine Cabinet 8 Doors (High Estimate: $5,000)

A charming Period piece of Yoke back side chairs will be featured at Lot 206. This Ming Period pair of yoke back side chairs features a crested top rail and S-curved rectangular splat. Supported on legs joined by carved aprons, this pair features a conservative high estimate of $1,200.

Another Ming Period furniture set can also be found at Lot 240: a Classic Ming Period Shelf Cabinet. Supported on four legs and comprised of an upper open shelf and a lower closed section with two hinged doors and drawers, the shelf cabinet displays valuable signs of aged crimson lacquer. Commanding a high estimate of $2,000 this lot is competitively starting at $500.

Jade collectors will be pleased to find a Rare Chinese white Jade Carved Zodiac Pendant piece at Lot 157. Hailing from the 18th or 19th Century, this rare jade plaque set is comprised of one circular Bi disc centre piece and twelve plaques arranged in alternating bi disc and axe shapes. Both sides feature archaistic characters in low relief. The white-toned jade set with pale mutton fat and celadon suffusions is expected to surpass its $25,000 high estimate.

The final lot to be highlighted hails from the collection of ivory carvings. Lot 405 features a Ming Period ivory carved figure of Eight Immortals. Each figure is carved alongside its own totem beast. The Ming Period ivory carving commands a $2,000 high estimate.
